Ronald Regan is the president of the United States. Gorbachov is leader of the USSR. How they agreed to pitch in together and save three whales caught beneath the ice over 5 miles from open water is a wonderful story.
Big Miracle
I must have been on another planet while the rest of the world watched from afar. A family of three whales - Fred, Wilma and Bam-Bam are caught under the icea over five miles from open sea. Pt. Barrow, Alaska is the locale - the furthermost cities north in Alaska. A reporter is in Pt. Barrow to talk about a Mexican restaurant - the futhest northern Mexican restaurant in the world. He happens to come upon three whales who are trapped under the ice. Whales, being mamals, have to come to the surface to breathe. The poor whales are having a hard time pushing through the icea that keeps forming and their noses and heads are cut and sore.
The reporter hops on the story and broadcasts it on television where millions watch and react. It is 50 below zero and the eskimos are having a hard time keeping the ice from forming;. To the rescue are two men from Minnesota who have developed an de-icer which can be thrown into the water and turns the ice into a bathrub. Only problem is the generator freezes-up and won't start. A big problem. Solution: turn on the generator and keep it going while in the helcopter that will take them to where the whales are trapped. With the helicopter windows open.
A huge ice-breaking barge is nearby and two helicopters are brought in to pull the barge towards the whales to break-up the ice. Will it arrive in time?
The President of the United States gets involved and finds that there is a Russian ice-breaker ship nearby. A call to Gorbachov gets the ship on its way. Meanwhile, the Eskimos are making one hole after another in the ice leading whe whales towards open water. More than 90 holes are made in the ice - a huge task in itself in the deep-freeze weather.
A sad moment in the story is when the baby whale, Bam Bam dies. Tears will come to your eyes when this happens.
The ice breaker ship finds that a huge pile of ice is on the edge of the ice and open water. They go 30 knots per hour to break up and go over the pile of ice. The result will make you smile.
Anyone who loves animals - and specifically whales - will love this movie. Happy viewing!
