Book Review: Star by V.C. Andrews
This is book 2 of the Wildflowers series by V.C Andrews. The book is a look at the life of Star, it includes the divorce of her father and her mother leaving her and her brother to live with her grandmother. The book gives you a look at how this young woman sees her family and how others see her.
In Book 2, you will meet Star, who will be the second of the four girls to tell her story. Star came from a different background then all of the other girls. First of all she is African American and second she is poor, however her story is quite powerful. She was born to a mother who did not want to be a mother and a father who had promised her mother all kinds of things that he could not make come true. She was brought to the meeting by her grandmother who was the only person to show her and her brother Rodney love, her mother had left her to her grandmother and now Star was an Orphan with Parents too.
Star's mother and father were always fighting about one thing or another from the beginning of her life. Her father was always out of work and her mother complained about it regularly and drank like a fish, they would fight constantly and then her father left after finding out that her mother had left her brother alone and went out drinking and he had hurt himself.
Soon after Star's father left her mother got a new boyfriend and she too would leave the children in the care of her grandmother who would be the person to take care of them both. Her grandmother who had not too long since she had a heart-attack was now taking care of Star and her brother Rodney. Star's mother had got an eviction notice and had told her grandmother that she was going to another place to earn money to care for them, but she knew that was not true and that her mother was not coming back either.
Star meets a nice boy at school named Steve who invited her to his house for dinner, they would both make a great dinner and then his father came home and it got weird. The next day he did not come to school and Star got freaked out and went to find out what had happened, she found that he had been abused by his father and then they got into an intimate situation. Then she went home, and the next day at school she found that he had not returned. She went to her guidance counselor to tell him that she was worried about him, and the guidance counselor told her that he was knocked out by his father and that he was now in a coma. She went to the hospital and found that he was indeed in the coma, later on he died. She left the hospital and she was confused and scared and she walked into the traffic and ended up in the hospital.
Star was another victim of parents who were supposed to love her and their divorce had gotten very bad, because her father left her, then her mother had walked out of her life. Her mother was now living with another man who was just as weird as the first, her grandmother loves her and her brother and that is all that mattered to her. When you read this book you will feel her pain and you will discover why she is really an orphan with parents.
