Is it worth the increased cost to move from your hard drives to solid state drives?

Hdd vs.. Ssd, What’s The Deal?

A lot of tech users know what SSD’s are and love them, while some people may not even know what they are. Solid-state disks (SSD) are an alternative to Hard-drive disks (HDD). Instead of high speed rotating disk platters with moving heads to read and write data, SSD use non-volatile (doesn’t lost information when powered off) NAND memory and thus do not have any moving parts. This allows them to read and write data faster than a normal HDD. Speed always comes at a cost and SSD’s are no different. While Laptop HDD’s cost 20 to 30 cents a gigabyte and Desktop HDD’s only cost 10 to 20 cents per gigabyte, SSD’s can run up to 3 bucks per gigabyte.

Additional Benefits

SSD’s have additional benefits. Since they do not have any moving parts they are generally more rugged and can take more abuse that an hard drive without receiving damage. Despite all these benefits to SSD’s, is it worth the extra cash? Well that really depends on the person. If you are an average college student writing essays, surfing the internet you will not notice much different. If you are a stay at home mom just using the internet for online purchases, or a person that does online banking, you will not need the extra speed the SSD offers. SSD truly becomes noticeable when people are running multiple programs at the same time, downloading massive files, or doing I/O intensive operations like working with video editing.

Are SSD’s right for you? It depends on what you use your computer for.
