Introduction:
If a product is available in the market claiming to be under super-fruit category, it may be reviewed properly on the basis of its content before recommending among the people. This is not a question which manufacturer manufactured it and the country it comes.
Today low energy diet concept is in practice. There are several products in the market that claim those do not have excessive calories and contain exotic super fruits. If a product is claiming that it will surely be beneficial for the consumers for weight loss benefits and improving overall wellness. Reviewer should consider the content of anthocyanins, flavonoids and omega-3, 6 and 9 unsaturated fatty acids of the product. These are considerable content of the products under this categoty. The product needs to have anti-oxidant power of flavonoids and anthocyanins.
Anthocyanins:
Anthocyanins are water-soluble red to violet plant pigments related to the flavonoids and appear red, purple, or blue depending on the pH. The content is almost free from any specific odor and flavor. It is judged like secondary metabolites as a food additive in Europe (UK Food Standards Agency, 2011), Australia and New Zealand (Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, 2011). The content has its potential health effects against aging and neurological diseases. It has good potential to give prevention against cancer, inflammation, diabetes, bacterial infections and fibrocystic disease (Leonardi, 1993).
Flavonoids:
Flavonoids are also called bioflavonoids. In vitro studies showed that flavonoids also have anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory (Yamamoto and Gaynor, 2001), anti-microbial (Cushnie and Lamb, 2005; Cushnie and Lamb, 2011), anti-cancer (de Sousa et al. 2007), and anti-diarrheal activities (Schuier et al. 2005).
Omega-3:
Omega-3, known as linolenic acid is essential fatty acid (EFA) in the diet. The deficiency of Omega-3 in diet causes to decrease memory, mental abilities, to tingle sensation of nerves and poor vision, to increase tendency to form blood clots, to lessen immune function, and to increase triglycerides and "harmful" cholesterol (LDL) levels.
Omega-6:
Omega-6, linoleic acid is another essential fatty acid in the diet, which improves diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, skin disorders (e.g. psoriasis and eczema), and aid in cancer treatment.
Omega-9:
Omega-9, oleic acid is also an essential fatty acid in diet which reduces harmful cholesterol, prevents excessive stomach acid, and constipation.
Recommendation:
A product is free from additives or fillers and easily added to foods. It has no side effects and is available at an easily accessible source on a justified cost. It contains sufficient content of anthocyanins, flavonoids and omega-3, 6 and 9 unsaturated fatty acids. On the basis of these properties the same product may be recommended to be included as favorite food in the diet for weight loss benefits and improving overall wellness.
