Facebook is currently the biggest social networking site globally. Measuring millions of daily active users, Facebook has become the most popular mean to share thoughts, emotions, experiences and personal info. But, when sharing becomes too much? It is not just your friends and family reading your latest status updates or looking at your photos; Facebook has unfortunately become an open door to your personal life and data.
Here are ten things you should never publicize on Facebook:
- 1. Birth Date
- 2. Home Address
- 3. Vacation Arrangements
- 4. Daily Agenda
- 5. Deepest Thoughts
- 6. Having or Thinking of Having an Affair
- 7. Play Dead
- 8. Throwing a Party
- 9. Photos from Last Night’s Party
- 10. Facebook Games

1. Birth Date
Even though it sounds harmless, statistics have shown that revealing your full birth date and place gives cyber and non-cyber criminals the chance to predict with great success your Social Security numbers. You even risk your credit or debit account as you give them everything they want; full name, sometimes even middle name, full birth date, birth place, current location and marital status. Instead of displaying your full birth date, just mark the birth year. Much safer.
2. Home Address
Never ever reveal your home address. Risking getting robbed is one possibility and probably the most harmless one. When chatting or choosing to enter to cyber relationship, you never know how things will end up. Just like real life, everything may seem great at the beginning. He is charming, tender, sweet-talking, fully understands you and you start thinking that he is all you ever wanted. But, as time goes by, you realize that he is nothing of what you thought he was and you need to put a closure. Statistics have shown that many women have been victims of cyber-addicts stalking them constantly. And sometimes, you do not even need to talk to him. A photo, a status, a personal comment is enough to have him on your door day and night.
3. Vacation Arrangements
Are you ready for the big trip? Share it with your real friends and family and not with your Facebook contacts. No need to let everybody know you are leaving town for a week. Even if you have kept your home address secret or have the latest home security system installed. Nothing is private anymore.
4. Daily Agenda
Giving away details of your daily routine may be too risky. It is just the same as telling everybody you will not be at home for the next 7 days. Do not give thieves the permission to enter your house telling them exactly when you will be away. Additionally, keep in mind that Facebook is also the stalker’s paradise.
Furthermore, saying the same things again and again can be extremely tiring. Ok, we got it, you get up in the morning, take a shower, eat something, drink your coffee plain, go to work and then to the gym. When you do something new, then let us know!
5. Deepest Thoughts
Facebook has become your boss’s best friend. So, by all means, do not share with everyone how much you hate your boss. Just keep it for yourself and real life friends. Moreover, it is highly suggested not to post info such as your sexual preferences, thoughts like wanting to rule the world, what you despise most on your customers and so on, as it is the best excuse to get fired. Nowadays, almost all major companies tend to seek info on the various social networking sites as a mean to determine if they will hire or fire you. Do not give them that advantage.
6. Having or Thinking of Having an Affair
The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers has recently revealed that Facebook is now officially the number one source of evidence regarding divorce lawsuits. If you wish to keep it in the closet, avoid posting pictures with your secret romance or implying statuses.
7. Play Dead
Want to skip school or work? Play dead to your parents or boss but certainly, do not post it to Facebook! Setting a status like ‘I pretended to be sick today and now enjoying a hot cup of coffee at the trendiest coffee house’ is something that will most possibly end up getting grounded for the rest of your life or even fired.
8. Throwing a Party
If you wish to see only the people you actually invited, then it is best not to post it to Facebook. Keeping it secret will also save you from giving excuses why you invited George and not Helen.
9. Photos from Last Night’s Party
Why show to the world how drunk you were last night? This is an unnecessary info that only jeopardizes your work status but also your self-respect. You are a grown up now; no need to triumph that you spend your night to the bathroom after the 15th tequila shot.
10. Facebook Games
Enough is enough! Please kill the auto-posting option for Farmville, Mafia Wars, Café World, Treasure Isle or any other game you are playing. You just cannot imagine how many people have been blocked due to game updates. There are even programs now available that automatically hide these updates. You need help to take down your opponent? Post it once! You do not have to post haw many cows you own in Farmville or whom you hired in Café World.
