The deterioration of the BBC

BBC televised news reporting has become more and more like CNN. There is a need for new channels that more precisely and more objectively report the news without too many political agendas.

The death of the BBC

I still like to listen to the BBC world service. For some reason, I think that it is the only wing of the BBC that is able to engage me on an intellectual level. The version of the BBC that I see on my cable television looks like CNN with British accents. Despite that, I begin to feel that even the radio is being poisoned by American style news reporting. I know this may be offensive to some Americans but I honestly believe that most of the news channels in the United States are trash and are designed to brainwash the viewers. At least the BBC world service tries to make it's hearers think, rather than absorb. I know that it is very difficult for journalists to be objective, since they are under all sorts of pressure to be careful not to disturb the wrong people but the BBC ought to remember it's roots and remember that there are people who don't want it to die so quickly.

Many years ago I was living in a country that had blocked the news. There was a lot going on and the possibility of a civil war. I was frustrated that I did not have a clue about the political situation, my own safety and warnings of events that could affect my business and family welfare. I turned to the BBC World Service even though it was difficult. I remember the signal was really poor at that time, so I designed a powerful home made antenna for my radio. I used the wires and the ceiling surface area and it worked! Yay!

I can remember being excited to hear what British journalists had to say about the current situation. I admired the BBC for being brave and sticking to what they were known for in the past.

Today, I feel I am losing confidence in the BBC. I wonder what others think about this. Do you feel the same way?

This has been true for such a long time. I would say the decline set in more than 10 years ago, before I left for Canada .

No American need be offended when someone says that American style of news reporting is permeating to more and more news channels and causing irritation among their long-standing listeners. The emotional tones of reported news are actually a hindrance to a civilized and balanced intellectual’s interest in listening to the news. Moreover, the emotion expressed by the news reporter may not be, and often is not, considered cultured by most of the listeners. Therefore it is wise and traditional to report just the news minus the reporter’s emotion. Then the listener can receive it in the right perspective and store it in the right compartment in his brain. He would be having his own emotions and thoughts while listening to news. Do not kill them for they have to be diverse and heterogeneous from people to people. The BBC has been doing its greatest of services not during peaceful times but in the turbulent times of war, especially in the Second World War, when their radio news was the only reliable source of information for civilians as well as soldiers, friend and foe alike. Such impartial was their reporting accepted to be. During many decades, people in many non-English-speaking countries have been listening to BBC for perfecting their skills in this language as well as for improving their listening and pronouncing skills which was a silent service of BBC to the world. So when the style of reporting or the aim of reporting of the British Broadcasting Corporation changes, unknown people all over the world are hurt. If BBC is corrupted, the whole world is hurt. If they need the world’s help for commercial survival, the world will certainly help. It is part of world’s heritage and tradition.
