CD Review – Lonesome Rider by Don Ray Band

The singer-songwriter Don Ray has released an album of his own material on Lonesome Rider. The album touches on many genres, but most of them are from the blues idiom. From the slow funk groove of album opener ‘Trigger’ to the slow blues ; Monday Morning News’ and the slow ballad form of ‘Love is’. ‘Ball and Chain’ adds some Jazz to the mix, whilst ‘Victim of Passion’ is the type of guitar powered song that Tina Turner would have performed in her second career re-invention. A well rehearsed band adds polish to the arrangements, with notable contributions from Curt Ryle and Mike Durham on guitars, and keyboard player Gary Smith, and Hammond B3 player Jonathan. The album is also all about a good groove, which probably comes from the fact that Don Ray is also a percussionist, as well as being a good vocalist with a soulful edge to his voice. All in all, this is a blues album, but it also so much more. Arrangements that go through more than three chords, solos that don’t outstay their welcome, and thoughtful, intelligent well performed vocals all help to add to a very enjoyable album.
