An Eggcellent Breakfast in Phoenix Arizona

A conference brought my husband to Phoenix. Since his family lives there, my son and I came, too. Saturday morning, we joined some extended family members for breakfast at TC Eggington's in Mesa (Phoenix and Mesa share a metro area). With two picky eaters on board, read on to find out how it worked out.

Restaurant Requirements

My son and I are picky eaters. I tend to prefer cheap foods that are kept separate. When it comes to breakfast, my son only wants pancakes -- the bigger, the better. My husband is a self-described food snob. He likes lots of flavors put together well. He despises chains, preferring quality "holes in the wall" and food adventure. I prefer chains, because I feel more confident that I know what I'm getting no matter where I may be.

So our breakfast requirements:

  • pancakes and chocolate milk for my son
  • scrambled eggs (plain), slices of bacon, and my regular soft drink beverage for me
  • a decent omelet (lots of flavors) and fresh squeezed OJ or milk for my husband

TC Eggington's

Given the list of requirements I sent our family member via text message, she suggested either a chain restaurant or TC Eggington's. Though I prefer chains, my last experience with the chain she suggested wasn't great, and I hoped a restaurant with egg in the name would be one worth trying.

So we met there and were seated immediately. The atmosphere was clean, warm, inviting, and brightly lit -- which can be hard to pull off in a restaurant that isn't a stand-alone building. The absence of flying bugs was the only evidence that we weren't at some ritzy outdoor cafe.

Chocolate Milk Eggstacy

When the server brought out the drinks, my son was in heaven. I mean -- look at that face! He was so happy with his drink that my niece ordered chocolate milk, too! She and the other adults at the table had ordered fresh squeezed orange juice -- no one was disappointed. The orange juice would have been way too pulpy for me, but many people prefer fresh, and this would be a great restaurant for that.

Mancakes on the Menu

My son was a little worried when he looked over his menu and didn't see pancakes. My husband pointed out the griddle cakes and told our son it was the same thing. First tragedy averted.

I was a little concerned that white bread wasn't a choice on the menu. That won't fail a restaurant for me -- I can eat eggs and bacon without toast. However, when I asked the server and with a smile she said -- "Yup! We can do that" -- it was my turn to smile.

So we were all happily downing our drinks when the food arrived. Even with our niece needing extra time to make her breakfast choice decision, food came out fast, plentiful, and hot!

I think my son was more impressed with the griddle cakes than he was with the chocolate milk. He declared his mancakes* to be just right.

*mancake: a term for over-sized pancakes that -- while I'm sure not coined by my husband and son -- is used by them to describe perfect pancakes

A Hearty Breakfast

With so many of us at the table, it took our server two trips to bring out all the food. This allowed me just enough time to take a good look at my son's mancake. Then, my order arrived. I ordered two scrambled eggs with bacon and toast. At a typical chain, the two eggs will be small to medium-sized, and the bacon will be 2-4 pieces of extra thin fried pork. So compare my expectation with the photograph. I was VERY happy to not have chosen the chain for my breakfast.

At just over $10 a person, this restaurant was a little more expensive than the chains I would normally frequent. However, the amount and quality of food more than made up for the few extra dollars. The next time I am lucky enough to go to Phoenix (Mesa and Phoenix are in the same metro-area) for breakfast, I will certainly return to TC Eggington's! Their eggs weren't just good, they were EGGCELLENT!!

Wow, that looks like everybody had an awesome breakfast, Phyl. I'm still chuckling at the "mancakes." You should patent that phrase!
