Where we left off
Carissa's parents died when she was four years old. She was close to her father but not close to her mother because her mother had a stroke and died shortly after hearing the news that her husband was killed in China. Carissa asks Katie-Ann to tell her about her mother and Katie and recounts the family history.

Snowy December night

At that point a big gust of snow hit the window and Katie-Ann got up to check outside. She worried about the girls. They had gone into town for a Christmas concert. She was hoping Winn did not have car trouble again. They did not have the means to purchase another old truck at this time. She feared having to ask her brother to take on another part time job. He had to do that last year. She saw how tired it made him and would not put him through it again.

Waiting on the girls

What is wrong Katie-Ann?”

“Nothing is wrong child. I just thought I heard the truck pulling in, but I guess it was just the wind. Why don’t you go and get yourself a nice glass of milk before bed and when you’re finished, I have a surprise for you.”

When Carissa came back Katie-Ann handed her a small box.

“What is it, what is it?” Carissa squealed.

“Well don’t just stand there looking foolish, open it child and find out for yourself.” Katie-Ann responded.

Carissa opened the box very slowly. She wanted to savour every precious moment. She rarely received presents and to think Christmas would not be here for another three weeks.

The locket and chain

Carissa opened the box very slowly. She wanted to savour every precious moment. She rarely received presents and to think Christmas would not be here for another three weeks.

Her eyes grew wide as she opened the box to find a gold locket and chain. She looked up at her sister in wonderment. Katie-Ann explained the jewelry belonged to Mama; a legacy left for her youngest child. Kate instructed her eldest daughter to give it to Carissa when “the time was right.” After this evening’s conversation, Katie-Ann decided the time had come to present the child with her mother’s most valuable possession.

In turn, Carissa cherished it for years to come. The locket was more than a piece of jewelry to her; it was her connection with her mother. Every night while saying her prayers, Carissa held the locket in her hand, and literally felt the presence of her Mama in the room with her. It was the last feeling she had before closing her eyes to continue her nightly dialogue with her angels.
