Where we left off
Jean has gone to spend Christmas with her boyfriend and his family. Katie-Ann is furious and little Carissa doesn't understand why her sister Jean could not be home for Christmas.

Some yucky boy

Christmas that year was very quiet. It was the first year since Mama’s passing and the first year the siblings did not share the bounty together. Carissa frequently looked over at the empty seat which was normally occupied by Jean; yet, no one mentioned her at all that day. It was so strange and so confusing. She did not know what to make of it. How could they not speak about their own sister? Why wasn’t she coming home for Christmas? Why would some yucky old boy be more important to her than her own family? Whenever she tried to broach the subject they would quickly change it. Finally Louisa took her aside and said,

Hush child

“Hush child, you know your sister is coming back after Christmas, don’t let Katie-Ann hear you. She is very angry with her. She forbade us to speak her name today. She said she didn’t want Jean to ruin Christmas day.”

“Well she sure ruined my Christmas Day. She is not here with us where she s’pose to be.”

“Child nobody can ruin your Christmas Day. Remember, Christmas is all about the baby Jesus. It is his day. Jeannie will be back soon. I am sure she misses you so very much and she can’t wait to give you a great big hug.”

Porcelin doll

Carissa opened her presents the first thing in the morning, but there was nothing from Jean. Katie-Ann made her a beautiful dress and bought her a lovely pair of shoes. Erin knitted her a hat, mittens, and matching scarf. Elizabeth gave her barrettes and some pretty combs for her hair. Louisa bought her a storybook and a game. Yet, the gift she was most delighted with was from Winn. He gave her a beautiful porcelain doll. She never owned a baby doll in her life. Her big brother must have noticed how she lovingly gazed at it the few times she accompanied him to the department store in Sydney. She never thought that he noticed!
