This article is a review of a best-selling book.

It was this author's first book, and it is written with a great vigour. I really got a lot out of it. It is most insightfully and meaningfully written.

The author believes in the holographic nature of the Universe. Every piece of the Universe is not just connected to, but contains every other part within itself too.

Love is all inclusive. Self-rejection means we do not love all parts of ourselves

Love includes every other emotion within itself, including the emotions that we fear, or hide.

So claims the author, Debbie Ford of this book about how to reclaim our dark side.

When we reject parts of ourselves, in so doing, we restrict our freedom, she says.

We need to learn from all of the parts of ourselves, and make peace with them. Only by our doing this, will we find the greater peace that is compiled of peace existing within all of the smaller pieces.

In order for us to accept all of ourselves, we need to accept our shadow self too.

A whole chapter of this book is entitled, "Know thy shadow, know thy self."

This chapter is one of the best in the book.

Our shadow selves are usually well-hidden in some deep fearful part of ourselves, and are well disguised so that others will never see this part of ourselves through the external self that we portray to them, and which sometimes is the exact opposite of who we really are.

We show the world a certain mask of toughness, but really we are a sensitive, caring person, underneath this outer mask.

We put on displays of laughter, and are humorous in other people's company, to hide, or to cover-up, our extremely painful feeling of deep inner sadness.

"Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people."

This quote from the Swiss Psychotherapist, Carl Jung (1875 to 1961) describes well what this book is all about.

When we know our own darkness, all becomes brighter around us then. Other people's shadows do not so affect our own light so much after that also.

A line or two about the author

The author Debbie Ford, as well as being an author, was a lecturer and coach who gave seminars in the self-development area. She unfortunately died in 2013, at the relatively young age of only 57, from cancer.

She wrote eight more books after this one, and also hosted TV and radio shows. This is a link to her web site.

She is best-known for this her first book. She appeared on the then running Oprah Winfrey in the year 2000, and subsequently her book then became a best seller.

The author had a long battle with her cancer, which lasted more than ten years.

Unfortunately she's gone now, but her great works live on, hopefully not just in the shadows.

This book of 184 pages was first published in 1998, but it has been reprinted a few times after that.

Exercises that can help you move past not seeing/owning your shadow

At the end of most of the chapters in this book are some exercises for the reader to do.

Some of these are imaginative/meditative in nature, some are more direct.

There is one exercise, for example, that allows us to discharge toxic emotions that have become toxic in our bodies, because they remain unreleased.

For example, if we have an emotion of anger, that we are always suppressing, she simply tells us to sit or stand in front of a mirror, and repeat a sentence such as this one to ourselves, over and over again.

"I am angry"

We are to repeat doing this until the charge or energy around the word fully dissipates for us. At this stage, we will be released from our holding onto this emotion within our shadow self anymore.

A quick summary of the book

"Never forget that you are not in the world; the world is in you. When anything happens to you, take the experience inward."

This quote is from the self-help author, Deepak Chopra. It is from one of his many books.

This one was entitled: "The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life."

The emptiness of the world is the fullness that is held within when it has been emptied of its shadow self. The shadow is the world, and the realness is within.

The rushing past silence creates the false self which then has a shadow. Stay in the light of silence, and all shadows disappear in the fullness of this great emptiness then.

Do not mistake the shadow for the greater reality. The shadow within is merely a mirroring of the shadow world without. The world must be emptied from you for you to see the fullness that you have emptied out into it.

Oneness is only light. There are no shadows within light.

We need to move past both shadows to see only the light.

Her book is a good beginning point for us to learn how to do just this.
