CD Review – The Orb Featuring David Gilmour – Metallic Sphere

This collaboration between David Gilmour, who has one of the most instantly recognisable guitar sounds in rock, and the Orb, known for their ambient soundscapes, should seem like a good match, and at times it is.

Gilmour’s shimmering, melodic guitar floats through the two tracks that make up the album, each more than 20 minutes long. Swashes of keyboards, found sounds, spoken words and a myriad of sound effects help to make up the background noise, and at times it seems that is simply a collection of sounds that has been put together.

‘Metallic Side’ consists of five separate movements, moving from washes of keyboards and guitar, to stacked guitars playing over programmed drums ad beats, whilst ‘Black Graham’ is a massed song of acoustic guitars, singing and strange sounds. There are times when it sounds like Tubular Bells’s more commercial brother, and other times when it sounds completely new and unexpected.

‘Spheres side’ is once again split into five separate sections, but contains DJ scratches and record decks, and more strange noises. It is the less immediately appealing piece on the album, and there are moments which are difficult to listen to, but it does reward being repeated, and Gilmour’s bluesy phrasing does sound particularly effective during some of the moments on the album.

This is an album that should appeal to lovers of melodic ambient music (Moby did sell a lot of records) and any one waiting to hear Gilmour’s talents, just playing guitar for the fun of it.
