Captain America to the Rescue

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the adaption of the comic of the same name. Captain America now has to face unknown enemies that will force him to on the run from the very organization he works with. He will have to learn the secrets of a far reaching mystery as well as take down a ruthless assassin with the help of Black Widow and Falcon.

The movie parts ways from the comic in many ways but that was for the best. The changes made help the movie feel like a natural outgrowth from the first movie. This also helps it offer surprises for all those who go to see it. The first movie resembled a war movie more so than a superhero movie. Winter Soldier continues this by being more elements of a different type of movie. The feel of a political thriller is front and center. Not to say there isn’t some nice action scenes to please those expecting a more superhero type movie.

The issues Cap faces will resonate with the audience. The debate of privacy and the threat of having security at the expense of freedom are explored. It is certainly a more extreme type and the movie doesn’t feel preachy by avoiding drawing parallels with more realistic examples. The action and twists aren’t the only good reason to see this movie.

The Characters

It’s a joy watching the characters. The contrast between Captain America and Black Widow helps adding tension to the idea no one can be trusted along with some comedic movements Marvel movies are known for. The Winter Soldier truly feels intimidating. This is expressed more so in his almost nonchalant movements during some scenes than any dialogue said.

Anthony Mackie does well in portraying the Falcon. The character doesn't come off as simply a side kick to Captain America but doesn't quite feel like he could stand on his own just yet. Hopefully this will change in the third installment that will undoubtedly happen.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an excellent start to the blockbuster season. It is sure to be a hit with fans of superhero movies and those who prefer a bit of drama and political intrigue.

Good work. Do you plan on looking at Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy next?
