In big cities and even in many smaller ones, eating out is becoming quite common. Many people even do so every weekend. The Trend of standalone Restaurants has caught in cities like Newyork City, London, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Shanghai, Paris and many more. So, what are the challenges for a person who is a regular there and is also keen on writing Reviews. Please read on...

The Trend of Eating out

If we go back to 40 or 50 years or in many countries, even 10-15 years back, people mainly used to eat at their homes. They rarely ventured outside to have food at Restaurants- whether standalone or in Hotels. Especially in India, the trend was that people were eating out mainly at Marriage functions, during visits to their relatives, friends or In-Laws.

However, in recent years, globally as well as in India, due to changing work cultures, shift timings, changing dynamics of global culture, more and more people are eating out. This has lead to a boom in standalone Restaurants as well as Food Courts. These businesses though tough have a higher margin than say FMCG(Fast Moving Consumer Goods), or other Retail ventures. In turn, these Food joints and courts have given rise to related advertisement industry, Online and Offline Coupon Business and yes a breed of people called as "Foodies", or professional and amateur Food Restaurant Review Writers.

Yet this task is not a mean one if one wants people to read what they write seriously. Let us explore in the next section.

What are the challenges in writing a Restaurant Review

A professional writer or a journalist often has a well planned often office-approved plan of writing Restaurant Reviews. Often these are sponsored or paid for.
Yet if one wants to write restaurant reviews as a casual writer, there are some great challenges to overcome.
What can they be:

  1. Often people who are casual writers or bloggers about Food and Restaurants also read reviews by other people often professionals on different websites such as TimesCity . Now it is up to the person to decide whether to follow the style of the professionals like writing: "The so and so chicken had a subtle spicy taste." Or write in one's own words like: "The abc chicken was hot but not as spicy as I would have liked." Copying someone's style might not be very professional looking, but perhaps it can attract some initial audience.
  2. Whether to use pictures posted by others, or use one's own pictures only?
  3. Whether one ought to stick to foods like one's country food, Italian, Chinese, Continental or some more which one is aware of, or should one try out different stuff also.
  4. One of the toughest challenge would be to overcome bias against certain style of cooking. Say, a person who likes bland food might be totally biased against spicy foods. Or a person fond of sweet stuff might be averse to try and write on bitter tasting foods. So how one adjusts could be a great challenge.

The list above is not comprehensive, but it does give an insight into writing such reviews.
And yes, along with the challenge comes the excitement of having different foods and drinks around you.

You know something, I was just thinking the other day, when I saw that tv program on food preparation each day for children. I think soon we will need such catering services in each locality. It will save a lot of headache for working people, instead of that mumbai's "dabbawala" adding to overcrowded trains. It will save a lot of water for cleaning utensils. And well, people could order what they like well in advance. Imagine we would not need those carry bags, and shopping chores. lol
So restaurants have a long way to go. And bright prospects whatever be their size and menu. Such reviews will not matter when the companies are giving monthly contracts. They will have to do a good job. :)

Well, I diagree a bit. We have sites like Zomato and a few more sites like TimesCity, where people do check about Restaurants, the kind of food etc, and good reviews may "influence" someone to try a new Restaurant, and who knows some 10-15 such reviews can make a cascading impact, and grow their business?

But when it comes to saving on water and effort, and perhaps saving time on cooking, shopping, and a whole lot of other things, we may soon see an era like that. lol. At least, it does mean a lot of water saved.

Many have tried it but sort of given up after a while.

The reviewer should be impartial though some are given incentives to write and feel obligated. I get amused reading movie reviews and the comments that follow!

One has to be sincere and frank and that can be clear from how the review is written. Some have made a name for themselves in the way they come across as honest - siva

I too have found that only a few are impartial. And yes it is a niche area but exciting too. Think in terms of how to describe that average looking "Karahi Paneer" or "Honey Chilli Potato" in a way that reader can be interested !

Yes Ptrikha there is nothing better than eating...or writing about eating. It is almost the same thing.
Challenge is of course not to eat up what you have written...ha ha not serious...challenge is to keep the writing appetizing.
Nice article Ptrikha, I was expecting a program not a menu.

also the reviews are subject to taste, I had a dish once where the reviewer complained there was not enough sauce and I found there was quite a bit of sauce
