The CD of Build a Rocket Boys! by Elbow is really a great album and is definitely worth the money. I highly recommend it to Elbow music lovers.

Build a Rocket Boys!

I have recently bought two music CDs in my local HMV shop. One is Love Songs (A Compilation...Old and New) by Phil Collins, and the other is Build a Rocket Boys! by Elbow. This article is a review of Elbow’s CD.

The CD:

Build a Rocket Boys! is the fifth studio album by Elbow, which was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize. The CD was on market in 2011. It was self-produced by the band in Blueprint Studios, Manchester. It has one disc set and includes 11 songs, which all were sung by Guy Garvey. The song’s details are listed below.

1: The Birds
2: Lippy Kids
3: With Love
4: Neat Little Rows
5: Jesus Is a Rochdale Girl
6: The Night Will Always Win
7: high Ideals
8: The River
9: Open Arms
10: The Birds (reprise)
11: Dear Friends

About Elbow and Guy Garvey:

Elbow are British alternative rock band which consist five members; Guy Garvey, Mark Potter, Craig Potter, Pete Turner and Richard Jupp. They have played together since 1990 and recorded five studio albums: Asleep in the Back (2001), Cast of Thousands (2003), Leaders of the Free World (2005), The Seldom Seen Kid (2008) and Build a Rocket Boys! (2011). They have won some music rewards including the Brit Award, the Ivor Novello award and the Mercury Music Prize, etc.

Guy Garvey was born in 1974 in Greater Manchester, England. He is the singer and guitarist in the band Elbow. He is also a presenter for BBC 6 Music and a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Price and availability:

As I said earlier I used £10 voucher for two CDs in a HMV shop. However you may possibly be able to get it cheaper online. Currently it is sold on Amazon website for just £5.53 with free delivery. It’s also available on other retailers and the prices are similar.

My opinions:

Before I bought the CD I did have some ideas about Elbow. I was given a CD of The Seldom Seen Kid in 2008 and I loved it very much. I like Guy Garvey and I think he’s a great genius. So I did have a high expectation for their new album. However after listening to all the songs in the new album I felt a little upset. In my humble opinion Build a Rocket Boys! is less successful than The Seldom Seen Kid.

Due to my limited ability in English I can’t understand every word in the album, even with the help of the sleeve notes. Out of the 11 songs there are three songs on which I was very impressed.

The first one is Lippy kids, which was inspired by the childhood memory of Guy Garvey. When I listened to the song I felt the time is back and I saw some of my past. One of the reasons I like elbow is their songs are always connected with real life. You can easily find something in common with them. The second one is the night will always win, which perfectly displayed the beauty of Guy Garvey voice. The last one is the river, which was about a little story. When I listened to it I felt I was kind of in a dream like the singer. Some thing was happened in your past, but you could not exactly catch it.

Final word:

The CD of Build a Rocket Boys! by Elbow is really a great album and is definitely worth the money. I highly recommend it to Elbow music lovers.
