It is commonly thought that the ancient Egyptians were the first people to domesticate cats, however, the oldest known pet cat was recently found in a 9,500-year-old grave on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The grave predates early Egyptian art depicting cats by more than 4,000 years.

1.The Lion Sneezed out a cat:

According to legend, Noah prayed to God for help protect all the food he stored on the ark from being eaten by rats. God responded and made the lion sneeze, and out jumped a cat.

2. Cats hear better than dogs:

A cat’s hearing is far better than a dog’s. Cats can hear high-frequency sounds of up to two octaves higher than a human.

3. Cats can run 49 kph:

Cats can travel at a top speed of approximately 31 mph (49 km) over short distances. In a single bound, a cat can jump up to five times its own height.

4. Cats can survive 20 m. falls:

Due to their righting reflex, some cats have survived falls of over 65 feet (20 meters). The eyes as well as the balance organs in the inner ear tells it where it is in space for the cat to land on its feet. Even tailless cats have this ability.

5. Rubbing against humans is marking territory:

When a cat rubs against people, it is not only to be affectionate but is also marking out its territory with its facial scent glands. The cat’s scent is also situated in its tail and paws.

6. Why do cats purr?

Scientists are uncertain exactly how a cat purrs. Many veterinarians believe that a cat purrs by vibrating vocal folds deep in its throat. To do this, a muscle in the larynx opens and closes the air passage about 25 times per second.

7. The Egyptian pet cats were embalmed:

In ancient Egypt, when the family cat died, family members would mourn by shaving off their eyebrows. They are also known to have held elaborate funerals during which they drank lots of wine and beat their breasts.

The dead cat was embalmed and enclosed in a sculpted wooden mask and then the tiny mummy was placed inside the family tomb or even in a pet cemetery together with other tiny mummies of mice. More than 300,000 mummified cats were found in an Egyptian Cemetery in 1888.

8. Why call a cat puss?

The principal words for “cat” namely the term “puss” is in the Romanian term pisicaand. Some scholars also suggest, “Puss could be imitative of the hissing sound widely used to get a cat’s attention.

9. The first modern cat:

The modern cat’s earliest ancestor lived about 30 million years ago. Scientists call it the Proailurus, which means, “first cat” in Greek. Our pet cats belong to a group of animals that emerged around 12 million years ago.

10. Security minded cats:

In the Dutch embassy in Moscow, Russia, staff noticed that their two Siamese cats had kept meowing and clawing at the walls of the building. Finally their owners investigated, thinking that they would find mice, but instead, they discovered hidden microphones placed there by Russian spies. The cats heard the microphones being turned on and off.
