20 years ago, the "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" Mary J. Blige dropped her classic sophomore album, My Life, which made her a legend.

Mary's Masterpiece

Twenty years ago on November 29, 1994, the undisputed “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” Mary J. Blige released her sophomore album, My Life. It was one of the greatest soulful albums ever. It set a standard in the age of Pop-R&B. Mary J. Blige poured her heart and raw emotions into My Life, creating a masterpiece. She sang about her abusive relationship, her battles with alcohol and drugs, and her depression. Mary J. Blige’s melodious, yet powerful voice blended perfectly with all the soul samples on the album.

As a listener, I felt like I was in an urban action drama. My Life displayed sadness, anger, pain, and happiness that clutched at the very soul of me. My favorite songs on the album are "Mary Jane (All Night Long)," "You Bring Me Joy," "My Life," "I'm Goin' Down," "I Love You," "Be Happy," and the bonus track (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman". Those great songs helped propelled My Life to triple platinum status.

Today, twenty years later, My Life is widely considered as Mary J. Blige’s breakthrough album, and one of the greatest American albums ever recorded. My Life still sounds remarkably fresh and vibrant, which makes it timeless. The album never seems to get old.

I recommend this epic hip-hop/R&B album to anyone who enjoys music with profundity and soul.
