How I think Wikinut should improve the method of messaging to Wikinuts?

My Wikinut Inbox is always flooded with thousands of messages and I'm not able to delete them in bunches. I have a few suggestions to improve the Wikinut Inbox and I think Wikinut will certainly consider them and make changes for better management of the messages we receive from the Chief Nut.

I was excited to publish my work at Wikinut...

I was excited to write and publish my work on Wikinut Website.

When I heard of Wikinut through a friend, I just joined because I was fascinated by the Wikinut name since it sounded similar to Wiki Answers where I was posting my questions and answers sharing what I know and compiling answers by gathering information from Internet search.

Wikinut event message options

Initially when I joined Wikinut:
=> I wanted to learn how the gamut of publishing at Wikinut goes on, and
=> I was eager to receive many messages to know how the Wikinut co-authors were responding to my comments that I wrote on their pages.

So, I checked all the Wikinut event message options (which you can access from the Edit your profile link) in order to receive messages
=> when one of my pages is moderated
=> when a comment is added to one of my pages
=>when a new comment is added to a page I have commented on
=> when an author I follow publishes a new page
=> when a page I moderate requires reviewing (I know this applies to moderators only, but I was expecting that some day Wikinut would consider me as a moderator).

Then I was viewing every message I got in my Wikinut Inbox, and I enjoyed reading responses to my comments I wrote on the pages of my Wikinut friends who have been a great inspiration for me to write more and more as I published my pages with great enthusiasm.

But, alas! My internet got disconnected for almost a month when there was a problem in the telephone landline through which the broadband was provided to my PC, and I didn't go for a wireless Internet option with a view of keeping the old modem with me.

When the broadband was restored, I saw my Wikinut Inbox was flooded with almost 6000 messages as I told you earlier on another page.

Why my Wikinut mail box is flooded!

As you know, the reason for such a large number of messages accumulating in the message box is that you cannot delete more than one message with a single click. And that makes you handicapped and you have to go on clicking as many times as the number of messages you have in the inbox.

If only Wikinut can provide a different type of inbox similar to that of Gmail or Yahoo mail, then you would be able to select all the messages listed at once, may be 50 at a time with one click as you do in Gmail inbox.

I found it very difficult to open the Wikinut inbox because it takes many minutes for the 6000 messages to appear on your screen, and often the browser hanged trying to bring up such a large list to view.

Then I found the following tricks to tackle this issue.

=> First thing I did was unchecking the option to "Alert me when an author I follow publishes a new page" (My friends I follow must excuse me for this).

=> Then I found that though Firefox opens up my long page of thousands of Wikinut messages better than Google Chrome does, though the former is not as fast as the latter in displaying the moderately sized webpages. (Firefox definitely wins in opening the Wikinut Inbox).

Is it possible to improve the existing message box??

When I asked this question to myself, I was also comparing Wikinut inbox to Gmail and Yahoo wherein the messages displayed are respectively 50 and 25 only, and you can delete them by selecting all of them with one click in the message list header.

Also I have these suggestions, if it is not possible to have an Inbox similar to Gmail or Yahoo-mail.

=> Instead of displaying "New comment on a page you've commented on" repeatedly, the message also should tell us about the particular page it relates to. For example, it can be thus: "New comment on the page (The Rhythm of the Apocalypse by Buzz) you've commented on". This way of message is straight and you need not click on it to know what page it is referring to.

=> Instead of displaying "New page by author NLTreasures" it can be "New page (The Daisy) by author NLTreasures" again avoiding to click on the message to know what new page it is.

I earnestly request the Chief Nut to consider these suggestions for a better interaction with the Wikinut authors. That would save a lot of time for all the Wikinut enthusiasts and they can utilize it for more output on Wikinut articles.

I also think my Wikinut friends would come up with good suggestions to improve in this regard.

Thanks to one and all for your time and patience.

That should make it better then. Yes, I agree. Also, I have invited 'potential' wikinut friends to join me here, yet I see under tasks to complete "invite a friend" still there. Since I have invited some friends and the message is still up to do so, I took it upon myself to say something about that to The Chief Nut via the Wiki invite box. That's right! I took the email address saved in my address contact list and wrote a message to ask them to clear that message from "TASK" PAGE thru the Wikinut invite section. I will appreciate any replies. I feel they will see my message there better as I had written previously to them about this issue and haven't heard anything back about taking care of it. Thank you for any comments about this issue.

'Invite friends' link cannot be optionally removed from "Your menu" which is common to everyone, and it is better if you could utilize "Generate a tracked link" to any page on Wikinut. This will allow you to post a link on the web to a specific page on Wikinut, and earn a royalty share of any new authors who use it and sign up.

Thank you Rathsnashikamani for raising these points. I get many mesages every day, and do my utmost to read and post on other authors work. If I missa day my box is flooded, and it's not easy to deleter the messages.

I know everyone of us face the same problem of deleting those many messages accumulating in case we miss a day to view them regularly, and I thought we could get a better 'Inbox' if Chief Nut would heed our request.

I think Wikinut is working on a solution to this problem, and Mark Gordon Brown once commented on one of my pages expressing the Cheif Nut's concern about it when I raised the issue of spam on our pages.

Thank you, Rashnashikamani. Your suggestions would clear up some of the backlog which can accumulate so quickly.

Hi dsyfy,

You're going to be 'out of action' soon on these pages.
Wikinut has a plan to eliminate SPAM.

I do not get messages every time somebody I follow writes a page, I have removed that from my messages, instead I look for the new icons in the Authors You Follow area on the right of the page.

I dont think Wikinut needs more moderators at the time but am sure they would consider you when they do.

I had already opted out of getting messages every time new pages are published by the authors I follow.

Thank you Mark, for the good comments and kind consideration of my desire to be a moderator.

Thanks for voicing this. It is certainly an annoyance and I am sure everyone feels the same. What's frustrating as well is that the site has no 'contact us' option. I hope you get to be a moderator someday. i asked as well. same answer :) Namaste

Your suggestion is worthy of consideration, my friend, as the inbox seems unable to carry such a large volume of messages without slowing down the system considerably. You may notice too that at times wikinut has a problem connecting to its data base which makes logging in difficult. Thanks for sharing and putting a link to my profile and page.

Hi Buzz, thanks for the feedback.

Yea, Wikinut often hangs may be due to large traffic it attracts.

Great ideas for improvement, Rathna. I'd like to see a message board where we could message other writers privately - like Facebook does it.

There's in fact a forum for Wikinuts. http://z15.invisionfree.com/Wikinuts_Forum/

Rathna, my friend. The problem with Kaylar's forum is there is no consensus among writers to go there. As you can see, very few, if ever, get to participate in there. The forum looks like a remote island away from the mainland Wikinut.

You're right, Buzz.
Then, we must think of a good forum for the Wikinuts to interact.
