Modern commercial world is witnessing a boom in supplement business. Globalization and media are promoting this even to a dangerous level. It is time to analyze if purchasing off-brand supplements can cause any danger to health.

Commercialism in modern trade

In the modern globalized world the supplement business is booming by leaps and bounds. Modern physicians prescribe supplements for any treatment from hair loss, to sexual potency, or to memory loss. The purchasing passion for medical and dietary supplements reaches into billions of dollars per year and increasing all the more every year. In this situation, it is necessary for the buyers of these supplements to be cautious about their purchase.

The stand of the FDA

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration), the agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services which is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, does not have the authority to regulate supplements as they do for medications. Hence it is easier for the commercial world to promote supplements through attractive ads.

It is true that herbal remedies, vitamin supplements, fish oil, and other supplements may have value to the consumer who is looking for relief for his health problems. However, the companies that package and sell these supplement materials do not have to prove their product’s ability to yield what the consumer expects from it. Everyday new medicines are flooded into markets which have some positive effect of relief. But they may not be free from harmful side effects when they are taken. Off-brand supplement suppliers are more worried about making profits than protecting the public interest. It is evident that quality standards are not set by the government for supplements.

Consumers at risk

How do the off-brand supplements flourish in market?

It is purely the modern commercial technique. Off-brand supplement products, often hawked by unknown companies, supply the supplements at cheaper rate, though they spend much for ads. Reputable pharmaceutical companies cannot compete with them at such low price. Moreover, their reputation compels them to safeguard their face with the public at least by showing that they provide only super products. The companies that promote these off-brand products need not bother about the standard of the product or about any loss, since they can reach their goal of profit before things come to light. By the time the consumers realize that the supplement is not providing the results that were desired, the company would have changed brands or moved on to find more victims elsewhere.

No guarantee for the off-brand supplements

Generally, the off-brand supplements do not cause any serious harmful effect because the raw materials used may be the same as the brand supplements. Though there is always a possibility of lawsuit problem, the hawking companies ignore it. Those companies get attractive incentives in promoting off-brand products. The companies that promote off-brand supplements do not give any guarantee and usually will not offer a refund or other compensation to the customers who do not receive the expected benefits.

Consumerism promotes off-brand supplements

Quality is ignored

Globalization and commercialization have made movement of off-brand supplements easier. Usually, off-brand supplements are manufactured in regions of the world where quality control is not important.

Consumers of off-brand supplements have to undergo the risk of ingesting something that may be harmful to them. It affects mostly people with allergic sensitivities. The fillers inserted to hold the pills together or enhance their appearance also may have side effects. It is in the long run that the consumer comes to know about the unpleasant consequences or low quality materials.

In the modern commercial world one need not be surprised about the dangerous side effects of off-brand supplements. It is the necessity of the consumer to think well before he purchases such products.

Well written, good subject. The consumers are too eager to believe what they hear as fact instead of challenging the claims by off-brand suppliers...
