Just Why Does FKF Want 18 Teams In The League

In a six-team league composed of Gor-Mahia,Sofapaka,AFC Leopards,Tusker,Chemelil and Ulinzi Stars, the federation would still earn the same revenue as they would with 16 teams.

Kenyan Premier League

There is an ongoing sharp disagreement about the number of teams to feature in this years Kenya Premier League (KPL).While KPL roots for the usual 16 teams,Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is in favour of 18 clubs. The two warring sides are however not telling us what value the additional teams will bring to the league? FKF and KPL are advancing divergent views without facts and figures to justify their standpoints.A statistical analysis will show that whether we have 16,18 or 20 teams, the league would still be controlled by Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. The big two have the tyranny of numbers and can 'arm-twist' both FKF and KPL at will.If you want to prove this, just try holding a super 8 tournerment without either of these teams.
And those entertaining the thought that SuperSport can give Gor and AFC a blackout are dreaming.Reason? The two teams have curved a niche themselves courtesy of their fans, the biggest asset any team can have.Though Tusker and Sofapaka know they can stand up to Gor and AFC on the pitch, they are equally aware that they lack a significant fan base to make them formidable.Fans of the 'Big Two' believe that the federation relies on them to rake in revenues and sponsorship. They know that FKF can exploit their huge following as a bargaining chip at any presentation.I am sure when throwing in bids for hosting continental tournaments, clips of the two teams in action are used to portray the enthusiasm of Kenyan soccer fans.If only FKF could support their claim for a 16,18 or 20-team league with numbers, soccer lovers would understand them better.Unfortunately, they are not capable of doing so.

Gate Collections To Run The League

FKF recently announced that their financial figures are on their website for scrutiny by an interested party. However, fans from Kibra,Kawangware,Kariobangi or Mathare who go to the stadium without fail to support their teams, would also be interested in basic figures to support either side. These guys are not idiots, they can add, subtract, deduce, divide, work out minimum and maximum points attainable and draw conclusions from the numbers. That is how the K'Ogalo fans came up with 'Giniwasekao'-(their slogan).FKF and FKL should be aware that fans know just how important gate collections are to run the league.
The also know that K'Ogalo and Ingwe are used to drive and market the league, and without them, the KPL would be a boring affair. Can someone dispute this reality? Take the 2014,16-team KPL league format. The total games played in the year were 480.Out of these K'Ogalo and Ingwe played 30 matches each, which adds up to 60.In principle, even if the teams were increased to 24,nothing will change except the number of games played.Gate taking revenues and TV viewing numbers will still be drawn from fans of the Big Two.Attendance patterns show that fans of the two teams prefer attending matches involving their favourite team.Ask SuperSport how many fans attended say the Sofapaka Vs.Tusker or Tusker Vs.Ulinzi matches. The figures are so pathetic that the cameras can as well be put on 'auto-shoot'.
If the teams are increased from 16 to 18,it will just mean that the 'Big Two' will play 68 games. Can FKF tell us why they prefer 18 teams and not 20 or 24? Is it merely a FIFA requirement and nothing more? Can KPL tell us why they want 16 teams to improve revenues for FKF or is it just to excite Kisii,Kakamega and maybe Eldoret (assuming Poster Rangers will make this their home turf).FKF should know that typical league matches pitting 'other teams' are played in almost ghost stadiums.I once strayed into a match at Nyayo Stadium attended by around 200 people. The crowd included stadium personnel, reserve players and staff of the two teams. That is the typical picture of the non K'Ogalo and Ingwe matches.

A Lesson From The English Premier League

This scenario is different from the English Premier League where every team, including a newly-promoted is capable of filling their stadium.Teams that may enjoy promotion this year will be picked from Shabana of Kisii,Homeboyz from Kakamega,Nakumatt and Poster Rangers of Nairobi. These will not change the league, besides providing an opportunity for small towns to make money when the big clubs come calling.
It is also very safe to say that FIFA allowed,FKF could host a six-team league. Some teams prefer playing at home and away matches against K'Ogalo in Nairobi because revenue earned from say the last game alone enables to settle all their outstanding debts in a day. Were it not for the fact that there is need to take the game of soccer country wide,it makes no point including teams who have no fans in the league.Their games are more like an orchestra playing in an empty theatre.
