An Overview of a few controversial books that have been written about Mary Magdalene.

The Meaning of Mary Magdalene

In her book",The Meaning of Mary Magdalene,"Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault looks at all the facts about Mary that can be gleaned from scriptures that are in print today including some from the so called"lost"' books of the bible such as the Book of Thomas
The Mary Magdalene that emerges from this research is an equal partner with Jesus, his first disciple,.the one who truly understood and lived his teachings. In fact the Eastern Orthodox churches continue to revere her.

She does not go as far as some who have depicted Mary as the wife of Jesus and mother of his children, but she does say they were intimate companions irregardless of whether they had sex or not. Chythia does say that a pope in the 6th century told a story that Mary Magdalene was the prostitute in the bible who was relived of seven demons by Jesus, thus discrediting her reputation and reinforcing the misogynous attitude of Christianity.

Mary Magdalene was the only disciple to stay through the crucifixion, burial and Resurrection, but after Jesus death was forced to flee to France to teach because the other disciples especially Peter had difficulty accepting her closeness to Jesus and that her knowledge was deeper than theirs .

Cynthia recently came across a manuscript recently published, which contains the gospel written by Mary Magdalene when residing in France. In this document she writes about the life and teachings of Jesus as she remembers them. This manuscript was preserved from ancient times by a certain family in France. It survived the time of the inquisition because of the dedication of this family. Cynthia obtained permission of the author of the now published book to send the original scripture to experts in New York to be authenticated, but she believes intuitively that it is the authentic writings of Mary Magdalene.
The book is called," The Beloved Companion" (The Complete Gospel of Mary Magdalene.)

The Beloved Companion

In this book Translated and commented on by Johanne De Quillan Mary relates stories of her life with Jesus as well as some of his teachings not related in the bible. Many of the stories are similar to the gospels, but of course her role is different. Reading it you understand her closeness to Jesus and her sadness at the hostility shown to her by Peter.

Johanne also writes about how the scripture came to be entrusted to her ancestors and why she decided to reveal it to the public now:"My purpose in translating and publishing this gospel is simple. I think it has great value both as an historical document and a scriptural text.........The words of the Beloved Companion come alive to bring us unsullied insight , and perhaps a new perspective on one of the greatest spiritual teachers the world has ever known."

Cynthia's comment on the back of the book: If The Gospel of the Beloved Companion is what it claims to be then, this is an authentic text from the very headwaters of Christianity, and it revolutionizes everything,Everything!

In the video below a fragment of the scripture is related.

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown

The famous book by Dan Brown subsequently made into a famous movie,"The Da Vinci Code," also puts forward the idea that Mary Magdalene was the beloved disciple depicted leaning on the breast of Jesus in Leonardo Da Vinci's last supper.

Interestingly Brown translates the original meaning of the name Mary to mean "priestess and translates Magdalene as "tower" referring to her spiritual status.

Though there seems to be no doubt in his mind that she was also Jesus' wife and the mother of his child or children. Hi s research was based on the research put forward by Richard Leigh in his book,"Holy blood Holy Grail" which is very convincingly researched and documented. He reasons that the grail is a symbol for the bloodline of Jesus and Mary. And he presents a convincing argument that they had at least two children, Sarah and Jesus (the son of Jesus) lwho went to England to teach along with his uncle Joseph of Armethea. Thus the legends of Galstonbury and the roots of the poem by Blake, The New Jerusalem.

Its speculative wherein it is a tale that can be debated based on existence.
In today's day and age a woman getting close to a man platonic or otherwise gives rise to wagging tongues.
None the less, their personal life is their personal life which will never be known.
There were 4kids if I am not mistaken and that is what probably led to the crucifiction.
