My personal review of a Movie based on a great historical event of the Battle of Britain during WWII.

The Historical background of the Movie

By 1940, the rapidly Advancing German Army and AirForces-Luftwaffe had captured much of the France and other parts of Western Europe with a very limited resistance. France surrenderd in June 1940. Having achieved his first objective of conquering a large part of the continental Europe, Hitler and his Military commanders drew an ambitious plan to annex Britain. To achieve their objective, they first made a plan to cause massive destruction to the AirForce fleet as well as the Defense structures of Britain on ground. They calculated that having achieved this, German Naval and Armed Forces could then invade and conquer mainland Britain. The German air raids of Britain started what was termed as the "Battle of Britain". The movie with the same name, made in 1969 & starring some great Hollywood actors of that time depicts this historical battle.

The Movie : Battle of Britain

Battle of Britain was released in 1969. This was directed by Guy Hamilton, and produced by Harry Saltzman and S. Benjamin Fisz. The movie starts with depiction of a few Allied fighter aircrafts being damaged, or fleeing an air base in France.
In Switzerland, a neutral country, the German Ambassador is shown meeting with British ambassador to Switzerland with some demands for a peaceful settlement, apparently accepting Germany as superior. However, the demands are not met, and German Air Force- Luftwaffe starts attacking Mainland Britain, especially coastal Southern England- Dover & surrounding zone.

Initially, Britain suffers heavy damage of Aircrafts as well as Anti-Air defense positions. It also suffers casualties, with many personnel wounded. British air forces hit back, & inspite of some casualties, keep inflicting some serious damage to the German air fleet.

The Battle Intensifies

Britain suffers some serious damage when German forces heavily bomb London & its adjoining areas in retaliation to an air attack on Berlin.
It is a historical moment of crucial decision making. The top British Air Force commander -
RAF Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding (Laurence Olivier) decide to start rapid training & induction of new recruits, especially Czech & Polish personnel.
This move, coupled with some not so good tactical decisions by German Air command leads to Heavy German Air Fleet and Personnel losses v/s losses of Allied Fleet and Personnel. Hence Germany stops its air attacks on Britain, and withdraw its attack plan on Britain, codenamed :"Operation Sea Lion".

A Movie Clip showing the Aerial Fights:

A Great Movie to Watch

This is a great movie to watch for a person who likes watching movies based on historical events, especially Battles and Wars., you would surely like this movie. The representation of the historical background, as well as the Aerial 'Dog Fights' (view formed in sky when multiple fighter planes are engaged), the British and German Air commanders and their subordinates, and the suffering of Londoners is fairly accurate. The depiction of the varied emotions that the Fighter Plane Personnel go through is also quite remarkable.

Finally, I cannot resist sharing what the WWII time British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said after Allied Forces success in the Battle of Britain:
"Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few."

Good movie review. I see more room for improvement in the application of visual effects like convincing images. Aim for the star.
