Does Scribd.com deliver a service worth the money?

Scribd is a subscription based like Netflix – just for books. Like Netflix the content is not anything newly released. They also have the free trail offer like Netflix. I am taking advantage of that offer to do the review. Then I will decide if it is work keeping or not.

I have used the ebook library through the local library and have found it lacking. There were very few books available that I wanted to read. I was very disappointed in their options. They have an audio version as well but it had so many bugs that I could never listen to the books.

I was also disappointed in the Amazon Prime lending library. The member is restricted to one book a month. I could understand if the service only let you check out one book at a time but only one a month. I can read 10+ books a month and I did not want to buy a book that I could read through the lending library.

Then I heard about Scribd.com on the radio on my way to work. A co-worker had also mentioned it. I just thought I would give it a try.

After signing in through my Facebook account I went through the questionnaire that would point the program to books I might be interested. If you like a suggestion it gives you click on ‘start reading’ or ‘add to library.’

When I was ready to read a book I opened my library from the right upper corner where my photo is located. After a display of my book selection come up I clicked on a book I was ready to read. Then the book opened and I had to adjust the appearance setting at the top of the page to read comfortably.

A simple ereader cannot be used with Scribd services because there has to be a browser to access the web page. However, with most phones now there are browsers to access Scribd. I did a search for a Scribd app on Amazon for my Kindle Fire but could not find one. However, when I tried to sign in Scribd with my Kindle browser it took me to a link to install an app. The Kindle has to be set to allow the installation of outside apps but it was very simple to set up. I can now read Scribd books on my Kindle. The app also allows me to download the content of the book onto the Kindle.

My final thoughts are: at the cost of $8.99 a month verses .99-$20.00 per book, Scribd is a good deal. Just keep in mind they do not have current releases. I did find many books that I had passed over because I did not want to spend the money on them when they were first released. I even found some children’s books that I would like to read with my son.
