My Video Game console media streaming days are coming to an end

Much better options are now available for streaming Media besides my video game consoles. This article discusses what I am currently using, and what my future devices may be.

A tale of two media streaming devices, and two new ones I'm considering.

Several years ago, when Netflix was just getting started as a movie streaming service, My PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were ideal for performing the task. At the time, there were no media streaming devices available. Tablets were not even available yet. At the time, it was a great solution, since the game consoles were already hooked up to my HDTV. However; now there are better and less expensive options available for performing the task of streaming media to your television. PlayStation Network and Xbox live are now liabilities that are in the way if I just want to stream a movie.
This fact was painfully obvious during the Christmas holiday hacking of both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. I shouldn't technically call it a hack, as it was just an overloading of the services by hackers using a technique known as DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service). This hack made the services of Xbox live and PlayStation Network unavailable or unreliable for over a week. This led me to hook up my laptop computer to my HDMI port on my HDTV to get my streaming movie/show fix. Although this method did the trick, it was hardly ideal.
One thing that I like about using the computer though, is I don’t have to wait for the console networks to update, or fix their various glitches. It just works, as long as the internet works. Although I thought having to go though a pay wall to watch another service that you are already paying for was silly, I still appreciated the fact that Xbox live used to be very reliable. Now that paying for Xbox live is no longer necessary to watch streaming media on your Xbox, the problems with using the services on the console have dramatically increased. The main problem with using the PlayStation 3 as a streaming device are the constant updates that I have to go through, or the complete disruption of the service.
These experiences have led me to believe that I may want to get one of the various streaming devices for under $100. I am leaning strongly towards the Amazon Fire TV. I like that it is a powerful device with great integration with the Amazon services, as well as other popular services like Hulu plus and Netflix. I also like that it doubles as a lightweight gaming console. I am also interested in the Roku 3 media player, as it has some unique channels that you cannot get anywhere else. I also like that you can use it with headphones with the remote control. Since they are both so inexpensive, especially when they go on sale, I may even wind up getting both of them at some point. I'm not really interested in the media sticks, like the Chromecast or the Amazon Fire stick, because I want something a little beefier with my media smorgasbord. Although I may eventually get an Xbox One, I am eyeing these other media alternatives for the reasons I discussed earlier regarding the Xbox Live network. In the meantime, I continue to use my Xbox 360 as my primary streaming device, but its days are numbered.
