A breif resume of this records brilliance & what makes it so great

Musical perfection in Heavy Metal guise.

I guess I'll never understand the metal world's love affair with this one. Yes, this is better than Turbo and Ram it Down, but it's not one of Priests best efforts. I love the fact that these guys stood up and said 'yeah, we fly the flag for metal and we're actually gonna try to participate in this whole thrash thing', and when this album is hot it's red hot.You can't just always complain about Judas Priest 70's glory times. Times had changed, and with Painkiller, Judas Priest showed to everyone that they still had a lot in the guts.Judas Priest pays tribute to Judas Priest minus everything that made Judas Priest good.So all we have left is well performed very heavy metal with nothing special. This album shows the direction Halford was going to go with Fight and everyone knows how unsuccessful that was... this album was nowhere near good enough to put the Priest back on track. One of the biggest (and most unexpected) comeback albums in heavy metal history. After two album's worth of thoroughly mediocre arena pop/metal (Turbo, Ram It Down), Judas Priest pulls a one-eighty and delivers a set of technically proficient tracks that seem specifically designed to please the group's longtime fans. This is pure metal. Everything about it is so great. I can only give 5 stars then thats what this masterpiece deserves. Painkiller the song itself is such a great number and one of my all time favourite in heavy metal.Starting the new decade, Judas Priest hardened totally their sound for 1990 "Painkiller", certainly the album sounds one step ahead of their generation's colleagues, namely Iron Maiden or Saxon. This album is retarded. The lyrics are ridiculous, the guitars are over-the-top, and Rob Halford sounds like a banshee. But hey, it's one of the best metal albums ever.
