This article is a review of the movie "Tap" starring Gregory Hines and "Down To Earth,' starring Chris Rock. It also is a review of the original TV series, "The Odd Couple."

Tap (1989) starring the dancer, actor, choreographer Gregory Hines is wonderful musical with a lot of tap dancing, what else would you expect from America's finest tap dancer.

Director: Nick Castle Jr.

Main Actors:

Max Washington - Gregory Hines Little Mo - Sammy Davis Jr. Amy - Suzzanne Douglas Nicky - Joe Morton Louis - Savion Glover

What is an ex con to do? Washington just gets out of prison, he really doesn't know what he wants, should he go back to his old ways as a burglar, or remember his dream when he was a child prodigy and a phenom of a tap dancer. Washington goes back to his old Harlem roots to his old tap club and meets up with his old girlfriend. Eventually she warms up to him and even encourages him to audition for a part in an upcoming Broadway performance.

My thoughts

I liked the turn this movie took, normally the star in movies gets the part and lives happily ever after but not in this case. My favorite scene is the audition. Max was reluctant to try; but, did go because of Amy's urging. When he got there he showed his superior dancing but the director was not interested he wanted conformity to the script. The director bullies Max into conforming and then asked him to smile, just to ridicule him.

After the performance the director shouts " wrong type next". Max will not take this public ridicule and grabs the director throws him to the ground and tells him to smile. I found this scene so powerful. A commanding performance over all for Gregory HInes.

Do see this movie it is well worth it.

Down to Earth

Based on the screenplay Heaven Can Wait, Down to Earth starring Chris Rock is a romantic comedy that can not be more comical.

Imagine a black man that gets killed before his time due to some bumbling angels; one even looks like a mafia hit man. The black man Lance Barton is offered a temporary body until a suitable one for him is found.

The trouble is Lance is a down and out aspiring black comedian and the body he gets is that of a rich white unliked businessman. Lance may look different to the world; but, he still thinks like Lance, and as Charles Wellington III, he has his white cronies wondering if he has gone crazy.

Main Cast

Lance Barton - Chris Rock, Sontee Jenkins - Regina King Wanda - Wanda Sykes Brian Rhodes - Charles Wellington III

My thoughts

I loved this movie especially with the scenes where we see white Wellington getting down and "going black" singing Sipping on Gin and Juice, or getting knocked out by black men who do not appreciate this white man singing " niggas must die".

The romance with Sontee is also nice, especially the scene about stealing the first kiss.

The Odd Couple

The Odd Couple ( DVD released in 2007) starring Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison and Tony Randall as Felix Unger are two polar opposite divorced men trying to live together.

The Odd Couple ( DVD released in 2007) starring Walter Matthau as Oscar Madison and Tony Randall as Felix Unger are two polar opposite divorced men trying to live together.

My thoughts

I did not find the DVD as good as the first series but all in all the quality was great for a 1970's sitcom. Tony and Oscar are wonderful characters that you just have to love. Tony, the neat freak, is so anal retentive he forgot how to have fun. Oscar is so care free and nonchalant, he forgot, to get serious and clean up. The two feed off each other and although Oscar grumbles about having Felix there, he can't really do without him. I love the sleepwalker episode where Oscar acts out his aggression for Felix in his sleep because he would never do such a thing in real life.

I also enjoyed seeing Felix as a calyso singer, it was so nice to see him let his hair down for a change and have some fun.
