The song "What a wonderful World" has been revamped and re-released many times, and each time it was in the face of world strife. the first time was at the time of race riots across 100 cities in the states, there was even the fear of civil war, the violence included attacks on Jewish shops, and now the latest version comes as the UN climate talks come to a close, with an agreement where the chair said they had "saved tomorrow, today".

The song just said all that I believed in.

I have never written a review before and I would imagine I wont write any more but I am prepared just for this one time to break my rule

I bought the Louis Armstrong version, in 1968 because I thought it was so indicative of all I believed in, as a lover of all that is nature and natural, I just had to be the first in line to hand over my penny's.

My life was so very different in the 60s

In those days whenever one wanted to buy a song, it was a natural thing to pop down to the local record shop to get your copy. no downloads in those days.
But the 60s was a time of looking at ourselves and asking questions, the world was tearing itself apart, but as I was very much a part of the music scene "make love not war" was our motto,

I was happy to hand over my couple of Krone (I was living in Norway then) for my copy and I remember playing it many times in the background for inspiration to my writing (Yup I was even writing in those days,) although I did have other things going on in my life, (But that's another story)

A big flop to start with

Only reaching 116 in the charts in the states selling less than 1000 copy's, but it reached number one here in the UK, it however sold more in the states when it was used as the soundtrack to the 1987 film Good Morning Vietnam.

It was also used In the UK, at the end of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Spitting Image rewrote it with the lines "I see forests cut down, great ozone holes"

Once again the song rises from the ashes

And now following the amazing TV series "The frozen Planet" David Attenborough has recorded it once again the only difference is at the end where in Armstrong's version he ends it with "Oh yeah" the Attenborough's version is "Quite simply wonderful".
I have been mesmerized by the show, it's been a great hit both here and in the states

There have been many other versions of the song including

  • Shane MacGowan & Nick Cave (1992, louche duet)
  • Joey Ramone (2002, US punk)
  • Kenny G (2004, saxophone added to Armstrong original)
  • Katie Melua (2007, posthumous duet with Eva Cassidy)
  • Coldplay (2011, intro to Fix You at Glastonbury)

"I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world "

I raise the question to you all, with the polar caps melting due to Global warming, the Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C that’s 1.4 °F.
With most of the increase happening over just the last three decades, mostly caused by greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels.
I think to myself What a wonderful World "But for how much longer"

My absolute favorite song Johnny. When it comes to my mind, it is Louis Armstrong's rendition of 'what a wonderful world' that I hear. You need to do more reviews, this one was top notch. As always, thank you for sharing.:)

Just maybe the greatest song ever written, and Louis Armstrong was the embodiment of the song's sentiment and meaning. Great article, as always, johnnydod.

Outstanding, I was born in 1950, a great year for a baby boomer, and my parents watched all the variety shows, that is where I first heard and fell in love with all the old greats... Louis Armstrong was my favorite...enjoyed this page so much...thanks johnnydod:0)

Johnnydod. Thank you so much for this page. I played the song and must admit I got a little teary-eyed. The 2nd coming of Jesus will have to be before we destroy the earth with global warming, and if He knows we are going to destroy the earth, why would he bother to come back? I have built a little pedestal for myself. I hope you have access to a computer while you are in hospital. Lots of Love, Ivyevelyn.

Wonderful star page, Johnny with an apt closing question--I bet Louis A agrees--and is pleased by this page (wherever he may no be). Frozen planet is awesome and it makes me smile that this song is promoted through it.

I love that song. I think I remember the Louis Armstrong version. I think that is the song I had to tell the radion station when I won $500 bucks on their station years ago.

"Make Love not War"
Whoever came up with this slogan was a genius. It's a timeless truth that will never die.

Maybe we need to remind all our politicians that wars are just a waste! Infrastructure can be rebuilt but what about human life?

Thanks for sharing this great piece. This great part of you is shedding light on all of us. God bless!
