Samsung PY-P2 MP3 player, is it a worthy contender?

First thoughts

Okay let’s just start of by saying this is no iPOD Touch, although there is a bit of
a resemblance between the two. But people looking for an iPOD in the first place
will not look at the Samsung P2 anyway.
For all other people looking for something else that’s got decent music/video
capabilities, fun and easy menu navigation, slim and sleek (somewhat sexy) design
and a bunch of nifty features then look no further than the P2.

What you get?

First of let’s see what you are getting for your money:
Metal casing in black, red or white
4, 8GB flavors
3” color screen (16:9)
Audio: MP3, WMA
Video: SVI, WMV9
Files: Jpeg, text
Size: 52 x 100 x 9.95 mm
Weight: 86g
Battery life: Audio 35 hours, Video 5 hours
More features: Bluetooth, Radio & Recording, Alarm, Calendar, World clock, RSS Feeds.

The cons

I’m going to start with the cons: Now most people would agree that it might be on
the overpriced side compared to other similar spec MP3 players. But that’s a
small issue. Another big gripe people are having with this device is its touch screen. Some claim it’s not responsive enough and/or accurate. I’ve owned this device for
a couple of months now and it’s been smooth operating the whole way. I guess it
all comes down to personal taste. Another big issue I totally have to agree with is
it’s audio and video playback support! Audio supports MP3 and WMA, that’s
still bearable, but video only really see SVI and WMV9. Also the supplied software
for converting isn’t very user friendly and sometimes out of sync. But one thing I
have noticed was the lack of a voice recorder. But if you are like me this is
something that doesn’t bother me at all. The biggest problem I have with this
player though is that it has no expansion slot to add a few GB’s.
If those issues did not sent you running for the hills and you can look past it then
you are in for a surprise! Everything just get better and better from here on.

The pros

The pros: Nice big crystal clear screen producing bright vivid colors. Everything looks good
on this, from the menus to the music visualizations and especially the music videos. It’s
really a joy watching it on the player although I think the screen is a bit to small when it
comes to movies. Pictures really do look great on it. The user interface could not be any
easier to use, and in a certain way it’s fun to use thanks to the clever Cosmos menu style.
Sound wise it’s up there with the best, with loads of sound effects and pre-sets.
A great feature is it’s Bluetooth connectivity that allows you to connect to wireless headphones
and Bluetooth phone support. Very slim and sturdy design that you have come to expect
from Samsung. After a long time not much scratches shows up on the case and screen.
And of course not forgetting those extra features such as a calendar, radio recording, world clock,
alarm and RSS feeds.

The verdict

It’s a shame really that these few issues had to creep in, otherwise Samsung could have
had a sure winner here. But by no means is this not worth a look at.
Overall this is a great little MP3 player from Samsung and if you can look past the few minor
inconveniences and are looking for something other than an iPOD then look no further.
You will not be disappointed.

Pros:
Sturdy design
Looks the part
Good sound
Great screen
Loads of features
Nice user interface

Cons:
A little on the expensive side
No expansion slot
No voice recorder
Limited audio and video support
Sync problems
