What is DDR3, and is it worth the extra cost to upgrade your older PC's ?

What is DDR3 RAM?

Double Data Rate three synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR3 SDRAM) is random access high bandwidth computer memory. DDR3 has many improvements over DDR2 predecessor. Firstly is its massive speed boost. It processes nearly twice the data transfer rate. Additionally modules are able to come in sizes up to 8 Gigabits per chip.

DDR3 is also more economically friendly with a 15-18% power reduction. DDR3 can achieve higher clock rates than DDR2 and thus can transfer more data quicker.

Visually the two versions look pretty much the same with the only difference is that the notch on the stick is located in a different spot for a user dose not try to integrate the wrong type of memory onto a mother board. As you may guess this means that they two are not interchangeable, and thus you basically cannot upgrade your computer without major modifications.

Is DDR3 worth it? It is really up to how intense a computer user you are. Prices may also make a difference and thus only time will tell on how easily DDR3 is widely accepted.
