Forrest Gump is a 1994 American comedy-drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The film was directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Tom Hanks.

Forrest Gump is the story of a young boy who has braces in his legs. Everybody says he is not normal and he has a low IQ. His mother believes in him and encourages him that he can do anything as long as he put his mind into it. Forrest mother is the one who taught him that you can anything as long as you believe in yourself. As Forrest grows up to be a man, he has faced many obstacles but because of his honesty, simplicity, loyalty and truthfulness he becomes successful in facing them all.

Forrest Gump could be a story of destiny and the randomness of life. He went through life without getting anxious about life itself. He just goes through it and everything falls into place and order. Throughout the movie we can see many symbols that helped developed the character lives. Some important symbols include the following.

The Feather

The feather symbolizes how you go through life. The feather can symbolize also destiny because there is no accident kind of life, you are destined to be there at the right time, right place and right moment. As the feather floats on the wind it also symbolizes tranquility and peacefulness. As Forrest Gump said; “I don’t know if we each have a destiny or if we’re all just floating’ around accidental-like on a breeze. But I, I think maybe it’s both.”

The Leg Braces

The leg braces symbolizes confinement and restraint. It is a symbol on how society constricts and holds back those who are born different and those who don’t pass the standards. The leg braces are symbols of the entire thing that held us back and freeing yourself from these can liberate you. In order to achieve something in life you have to break free. As Forrest breaks free from his leg braces he become independent and able to run free from what is holding him back into greatness.

The Box Of Chocolates

The box of chocolates symbolizes the simplicity of life and the fact that you cannot predict the future but you can still accomplish so much if just let it be. You do not know your destiny yet but like the box of chocolates you will not always get what you want but you can still like what you got. There is no map to follow in our search for destiny, but you know you reached your destination once you are already there.

The Shrimps

The shrimps or harvesting of shrimps symbolizes that in life you have to work to achieve your dreams. There are many obstacles in life you have to pass through before you can see the results of your effort. Forrest experiences taught him that before the glory, satisfaction and happiness, there would be war, problems and hurricanes. You should never give up, if at first you don’t succeed try again, there is no harm in trying.
