'The Big Wedding' Movie Review

The Big Wedding MA15+
Director: Justin Zackham
Released: 2013, United States of America
Cast: Robert De Niro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Ben Barnes, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams

This romantic comedy is refreshingly blunt and honest in its rapid fire delivery of ridiculous circumstance. Every character and plot cliche is blown wide open before neatly wrapping up each plot line in the end as demanded by 'rom-com' lovers world wide. With the perspectives of every member of this dysfunctional family covered, every viewer can relate to at least one of the constant stream of awkward family moments, seamlessly woven with fast paced witty dialogue.

Director Justin Zackham has loosely remade a 2006 french film (Mon frère se marie) with a cast list that packs a punch. Don (DeNiro) and Ellie (Keaton) have 3 grown up children Lyla (Heigl) and Jared (Grace), and Alejandro (Barnes) was adopted from Columbia. While Don and Ellie have been divorced for ten years prior to the occasion of Alejandro's wedding to Missy (Seyfried), This is a fact that Alejandro kept from his devout catholic mother in columbia in order to preserve her happiness. Don's girlfriend of eight years Bebe (Sarandon) also happens to be the ex-best friend of Ellie. The whole family pretend to be the model of perfection for the sake of Alejandros mother. This turns into a hilarous comedy of errors while the family juggle the skeletons being let out of unexpected closets.

Politically incorrect and sarcsatic dialogue is delivered with no appoligies but the scene moves on quickly so if someone doesnt hear comments like "its not like we neuked a petting zoo" (DeNiro), dont worry, they wont have time to ask you to repeat it. The characters reactions are honest and say everything we would deny ever even thinking. The one-liners allow each high profile comedian to get some laugh time. For example, Robin Williams plays the catholic priest who insists on tradition but speaks in a less than orthodox way. When the bride and groom-to-be are talking about their standing with the church Williams' character simply states "Hell it is then"

The awkward and amusing events arise from our assumptions about everyday stereotypes around religion, cultural differences, language barriers, love and sex, and the definition of family. All are delivered lightly with beautiful scenery, playful music and seemingly endless sunshine at the family home.
The casting is well chosen with Katherine Heigl playing a refreshingly more sarcastic character than her usual. Her response to her father saying how breathtaking she looks is "you've packed on a few".

There have, as always been some harsh reviews about this movie, however we mustnt forget that a romantic comedy is expected to follow a set of rules that allow the secular audience to feel entertained along with a good dose of escapism. 'The Big Wedding' achieves exactly what it promises with a cast of well versed actors all sharing their best comedic timing with each other.
Due to adult themes and language this movie is not for young viewers or anyone that is easily offended but if you have a sense of humour and enjoy finding the humour in awkward family contradictions then this movie is for you.
