Three Memorable Sci-Fi Movies

For every one of us there are a number sci-fi movies which always stick with us. Here are three of the best.

Independence Day

One of the first Sci-Fi movies I ever saw, Independence Day has kept its status as one of my all-time favourites. The movie is the very embodiment of epic scale destruction. The Alien city destroyers are 24 kilometres in diameter, and the Mothership is 550km. Entire cities are wiped out as the extermination of mankind continues. The movie follows several poignant stories and racks up a death toll that stays with you. A combination of fantastic special effects and a powerful musical backing make this movie an all time classic. And it all culminates with a moving speech before the final battle which never fails to instill a sense of heroism and pride in me.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Despite being Episode IV in the series, "A New Hope" was the first ever Star Wars movie released. While the sequel, "Empire Strikes Back" is widely known to be the best of the movies, this one made the list for the simple fact that it was a truly ground-breaking movie. Released during a time when movie effects were simple and timid, Star Wars blew audiences away with the massive Imperial Star Destroyers, the numerous space battles and the infamous (and loved by Sci-Fi geeks everywhere) Darth Vader. Vader remains, to this day, an icon of evil, a sign of how powerful an effect this movie had. It's a shame that with the advent of more advanced special effect the prequels simply tried too hard. For almost all fans around the globe, the original trilogy far outclasses the prequels in quality.

One of the most terrifying movies of all time, and a massively successful Sci-Fi film. Alien haunted viewers around the world with one of the most disturbing, violent and memorable creatures to ever grace the big screen. From the brutal Facehugger, through to the adult Alien itself, there is nothing about this beast to love. The movie followed a simple mining crew as they fought to survive when facing the titular Alien. Tensions mounts and fear takes control as the crew are killed one by one. The most terrifying thing about this movie is how little the Alien itself is actually seen. It is a master of hiding, capable of climing on walls, hiding in spaces that should have been too small and deathly silent. Many times the Alien popped out of unexpected locations to brutally kill another crew member, proving that nowhere is safe. A brilliant movie, never EVER watch it alone in the dark.
