Understanding Search Engines

We all talk about search engines, key words and how important it is to have a website that contains good keywords. Here I will try and explain exactly what search engines are and what they do.

The first and foremost thing is to understand the important differences between a search engine and a directory.

Search Engine can be defined as a system that “indexes” all the pages in the web. It process millions of web pages at a time and stores relevant information about those web pages.All three search engines works in similar fashion.

Though there are many search engines, the main three Search engines are Yahoo! (WWW.yahoo.com), Google (WWW.Google.com), and MSN (WWW.msn.com).

Search Directory can be defined as a system which groups web sites and not web pages. The directory has no idea about the content present in any of the pages within the site; it only knows what the site is about.

In terms of Directory, Yahoo! had the first massive directory on the Internet (dir.yahoo.com).
Google also has a directory (dir.google.com);
MSN also has a directory specials.msn.com.

How your pages are read by Search engines?

The search engines first come to a web site and start reading pages present in it. They index the text on the page using algorithms, and very complicated (and secret) computer-programming techniques.After that they will try to match the search term against the indeed pages.

Next comes the most complicated part. For Example,when someone searches the term “Brand Adidas”, for instance, the search engine attempts to find the most relevant pages for that search. Google will yield all the pages that matched the given phrase or the query, but how do search engines find your pages? Here is an internal technique all search engines use; it’s called “searchbots”.

Searchbots follow links all day long. They travel from one page to another, reading and indexing every page as they go.

What is your need?

The ultimate goal for every web developer is to make his/her own website to appear at the top of a search-engine. Because that’s the only way you can drive huge amount of traffic to your site. It can be done by few basic rules; it is definitely possible to create sites that will be indexed at the top by the search engines but it will take lots of research regarding the keywords you are going to use in your website.

I will explain how to choose great keywords for your websites in my next article.
