Metallica is loved and hated. They have made good music, so people ask 'what's with the hate?' Here I'll explain why.

Here's why...

Metallica are considered one of the founding 'big four' of thrash metal bands, an accolade only given to Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth. Their album, 'Master of Puppets' is one of the greatest metal albums released, and almost all metal fans are very familiar with it. They have won nine Grammy Awards and are ranked as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time.

To an outsider, you could be forgiven for thinking Metallica are simply amazing. But many metal fans would disagree.

You see, Metallica's original sound, heard especially in their first three albums, 'Kill 'Em all', 'Ride The Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' has long since disappeared. The raw, gritty and heavy sound they produced, and which had given them a cult underground following, arguably no longer exists.

What happened?

In quite simple terms, the band 'sold out'. They began making music which was aimed at the masses, and created to gain mainstream success - which they where very successful at. In order to gain success amongst the masses, they had to adopt a new sound, and leave the old material behind.

In 1991, Metallica simplified their music. Perhaps this can be argued that it was because of the huge grunge movement which was taking place at the time. Whatever the cause, it left a huge majority of fans angry, and made the band hugely successful.

Despite their new sound, Metallica have left a legacy behind which very few bands have - or will - be able to achieve.

They will go down as one of the greatest thrash metal bands in history. Fact.

How many of their original fans still passionately enjoy them today is another question though.

I am not really a metal fan, hard to say if Metallica sold out or just got "older", like the rest of us.

Mark, my guess is that Metallica had to find a new way of competing with grunge and alternative rock, which was hugely popular at the time. Some say it almost killed metal. That brought about commercial success for the band, and they decided to stick with their sound since it did so well. Just a thought. I would have loved Metallica to stay as they did all those years back, but it's just one of those things that will never be I guess. At least they left us with some brilliant music, and helped to spread the word of heavy metal - albeit a pop sounding watered down version of it.
